For me, “why” is seldom the problem. “What”, that is naming what it is I’m trying to accomplish, is much more difficult.

It’s really practical, short, and more accessible than Dallas Willard tends to be. He does work through the Vision Intention and Means of change (though not in so many terms), grounding the why and the how in the truth of the Gospel. Most of us start off on the wrong foot by getting the “why” wrong.

I find I’ve been using the VIM method recently so that concept really resonates. The tough part for me was the “Means”. Because I now have a son my options are greatly restricted and I had to get creative in order to generate the means to be who I wanted to be. Of course, the means is often just a change of perspective but that can be the toughest thing to change.

My natural state also tends toward depression but see if you can find the benefits or silver-linings in that kind of outlook. They are there. We all operate at different levels for a reason – the world needs that diversity.

As for your “fear of articulating my heart’s desires…” you will find that through your writing, if you are honest with yourself and your reader that your fear will dissolve and your heart’s desires will become reachable. This has certainly been the case with my writing as well.
