I’m not sure that he is so much a “complementarian” as he is an advocate of specific culturally defined gender roles. These roles tend to work well for individuals who got married out of high school, but are impossible to achieve for older singles, widows, single moms, etc. The word “complementarian” itself is a bit misleading. Noone would disagree that men and women are different, but you get into a dangerous place when you start prescribing what that difference is from a video screen.

As far as your “different strokes for different folks” point, I understand what you are saying. However, “taste” is not above critique. As I said above to Sam, I really believe we need figures like Driscoll who inspire people to live on mission. It would be silly to expect him to remain static, but it is reasonable to hold him to account if his language and behavior that is not like Jesus.

It appears that he has moved away from that in order to become a brand. Being a brand requires you to constantly churn out content and do whatever it takes to maintain people’s attention. My hope is that he can avoid shock value and “use his powers for good.”

The tragedy is not so much in plagiarism or misrepresenting Jesus as an MMA fighter, but in how he has abdicated his opportunity to inspire others.

There isn’t enough of that on the internet.

I like also how you criticized him for yelling, then when he was not yelling at Beck, you said he was ‘whining.’ Very gracious.

Sarcasm aside though, he definitely has had a bumpy track record all along, in terms of harshness, foot in mouth, etc. but also the volume of stones thrown in his direction. I never questioned much his focus on examples from his own life. I haven’t listened in a while, maybe it would have gotten old by now. I have no idea what lead to Matt Chandler taking leadership Acts 29.

I do know it is always easier to criticize than build up, and easier to criticize those we have (theological) disagreements with. May God’s Spirit lead us to a better way than re-trenching into old divisions (reformed-ish vs. anabaptist-ish) and pointing fingers at the mistakes in each others history.

Objectively written post…great title! The picture of W is the icing on the cake.
