That’s the biggest problem I see with the blog post you linked us to: He talks about church mostly in terms of what he experiences there (not that we never should, but it shouldn’t be our main focus). The other big problem is distilling the church experience into an educational one, which is certainly part of the whole, but certainly not the whole. I think your Bonhoeffer quote is a great counterpoint to that perspective.

I would add that much of what we do as The Church is for our own benefit, but only secondarily. Singing in particular should be first for the one we are singing to, not for ourselves. So it should be with loving our neighbors or travelling overseas to share the Good News. If I am doing any of those things firstly for myself, then I am not worshiping God, but me.
