I left the denomination in which I grew up (and in which I was sexually assaulted by an elder), and almost left church entirely once my husband and I started having children – because I have severe trust issues (particularly in church settings) on top of the awful purity/modesty teachings from our youth. Yet I couldn’t shake the pull I felt towards worshipping with like-minded people, to finding others who were trying to make sense of this messed-up world. So… I tried a new denomination and have found so much that I’ve been missing; for the first time since before my college years, I don’t feel like I’m “faking it til I make it” as we were often taught to do. And it’s worth all the years of discontent to have finally found others with whom I feel real fellowship.

I agree with the reason you stayed. I stuck it out for 6 years til I concluded I could have no influence that would be received redemptively, so I left. Freed from the obligation to spend all my time and money in the service of the organization, I now minister to a group of young men. I have the time to listen and the money to take them out. I am free to do the work God calls me to.

2) I’m obsessed with the idea of a contagious body of Christ that changes the world. This is why I stay. This hit me hard and moved me to tears. This is “the why that makes me cry”
