It is a sad commentary on where our recent forebears have been, or perhaps how the Enemy has managed to twist the impact of Christianity on culture, and/or popular perceptions of “Christian culture.” Or, it could just be that the pope is supposed to be infallible, so any mistake he makes is glaring.
On the other hand, we are all guilty (in the west at least, and America specifically) of worshiping a false god of comfort, and trying to enlist Jesus to aid us in that selfish pursuit.
