Well said. And I suppose reproducibility should be determined as it applies to lay a groups “lay” leaders/elders, not necessarily every person in the congregation.

Sorry to hear that you had to bring that to an end. Take your time reevaluating.

I know our process is reproducible, because we stole it from another church.

Compare Vella’s ideas to different types of social space (proxemics). In a small group, whole participation is normal and natural. If you want to be a house church, then you should aim for the Vella ideal. We’re aiming more for the medium tolarge space, because we believe that’s where a sense of belonging and “we-ness” happens. So some sort of facilitation is necessary.

As far as terminology, I’m not sure that it matters that much. However, I think as far as recruiting, it’s easier to ask people to “can you participate by doing x” than “can you lead by doing x.”

I like how practical you made this. We’ve just brought closure to our first missional community since half the folks are moving. I’m in reflection mode. One question I’m asking is just how reproducible our liturgy was. It was simple, simple enough for even kids to participate, but I’m not sure how reproducible it was. I was drawing on my years of experience with ministry and groups. I’d like to work on something that is truly reproducible. Do you think your current liturgy could be reproduced? Second, I’m wondering about the word “participation” on the scale. I wonder for “medium and low participation” a better word might be “leadership?” When I think of the word participation, I think of whole-group “participation” a la Vella and that could potentially be done in a large or small group. What do you think?
