YoungLife has been responsible for uncounted conversions and a lot of the most innovative approaches to church I know. I merely pointing out that entertainment as a goal is not helpful.

As far as Hebrews 10, it sounds fascinating, but I’m not sure I see the connection.

Do you perchance have this blog posted online formatted without the Louis CK clip? If so, I’d like to link to that.
Thanks,
Andrew Dyck

The folks I know in YL are highly discipleship oriented and highly relational in the mutual, intimate sort that Jesus modeled and calls us to. As I review your 5 point list, the only item there that involves two-way communication for the purpose of building up each other would be 5. Meals. Hebrews 10 tells us the “new and living way” Jesus died for is God’s design for believers getting together. First of all it encompasses all week long.
1. Let us draw near – we have nothing to offer God’s family if we view are 6 days before gathering as on our own. When we draw near to God he gives us food and water to overflow to His people. This is the opposite of coming dry, hungry, weary looking to get something to sustain us through another week. No, all week is for filling up on God and then contributing it to each other.
2. Let us hold fast our confession of faith – This is raw perseverance and gripping tightly to Jesus and all we confess, watching for teaching and admonishing to flow to the other saints.
3. Let us consider how we can spur one another on to love and good works… and encouraging one another. God’s people are to consider how to build up, contribute, spur in mutual, two-way communication with full responsiveness in gear when others contribute to us.

This is all the exact opposite of pulpit and pew oriented gatherings. This is the “assembly” or “gathering God’s people are not to “forsake”. It is all forsaken when we sit in pews facing a pulpit. In this pose there is not need for drawing near or holding fast or considering how… So most saints don’t, and that is boring. It is also disobedient. It is nullifying the commands of God. I see children as young as 5 participating in this on Sunday, barely able to read the scripture, but the Holy Spirit adds dynamite through their koinonia.

This dynamic is what is powerful in our fellowship and it is not boring. It is completely unpredictable. When we share the Lords Table there is a different brother every week. Six of us rotate, so the expression is always unique and fresh. No cliché’s.

Have you heard of the “new and living way” from Hebrews 10?
Would you consider it a proposal to bring life to your fellowship with God and His people?
If you finish reading this chapter you will read of consequences for ignoring these instructions.
