The idea that you can copy some Starbuck decor and make your church more “relevant” may improve “church coffee,” but not much else. Instead, be deeply, missionally involved in a third place. If you have the space, consider starting something that can become a third place. Just do it well, for it’s own sake, not as a band-aid.

Make sense?

I am talking about another post, but commenting in the context of this post because both are relevant.  You are speaking to the church creatively using their real estate for third place options.  I guess I was kind of pointing out what seemed like a contradiction.  I am in agreement that you are on the right track and these are the best practices going forward.

If you read the article, I’m actually promoting creative reuse of a space. Was this in reference to a different post? Perhaps http://www.chrismorton.info/2015/01/15/why-your-church-will-never-be-a-good-third-place/

The biggest problem, of course, is a long history of “how things are done” that exists to the detriment of new expressions. Rather than just thinking about the space as good for offices or other church meetings, I think we should think of ways to make it a viable third place for our communities.  Coffee shops, tap rooms, barber shops, play centers are all examples of third place community that can take place in the space of a church building.
