Friday Roundup (and Preview!)

Chris —  November 16, 2012

  • I’m more or less recovered from the jet lag of two weeks in California. Just in time to get on a plane for New York.
  • Returning home has been strange.  Two weeks suddenly seems like a very long time to go home.
  • It was sad to say goodbye to the Fuller MAGL “Kairos” Cohort.  I am amazed by how our peculiar, mostly online, education focused relationship has grown to be so meaningful.
  • Most of my peers returned to ministry’s they have a passion for and family’s they missed.  I returned to my liminal life in Austin. This has been tough.
  • That being said, I am more passionate than ever about making the big decisions that need to be made.  Two resources that are helping me so far are Jon Acuff’s “Quitter” and Keith Ferrazzi’s “Never Eat Alone.”
  • It’s probably impossible for Daniel Craig to make a better Bond move than Casino Royale, but Skyfall is just about as close as you get.
  • This may be a trend “Hero” movies: where the hero is really just a tool for roping you into an ensemble drama.  Skyfall is about Britain’s growing obsolescence, and focuses on the performance of Judi Dench as “M” and Javiar Bardem’s as the villain.  It reminds me of how Dark Knight Rises isn’t so much a story about Batman as it is a story about Gotham and the false promises revolutions. Christian Bale is great, but it also depends on depends on the performances of Michael Kaine, Morgan Freeman, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
  • I couldn’t be more pumped than to get on a plane for NYC on Wednesday.  I’ll be seeing my lovely sister and her husband, who I have seen since their wedding, the inimitable James Holston and his lovely sister Marianne.
  • What do you do when you’re burned out on all the tourist-y stuff in New York?
  • It’s not a trip to NYC without at least one Broadway show.  Any suggestions?
  • I’ll be working remotely on for two days, and will need some top of the line coffee and wi-fi. Where would you go?

Friday Round-Up

Chris —  September 14, 2012
  • There’s a lot on my plate over the next six weeks or so.
  • Less than a week until Renewing the City: Gospel Movements and Urban Church Planting.  I’m looking forward to learning from City to City.
  • The first ever Ecclesia Network Midsouth Regional Gathering is just around the corner. I hope you’ll drop in to Space12 for Everyday Theology.
  • At the end of October, I’ll head to Pasadena for the last two classes of the MAGL.  I’ve got a lot of reading to do….
  • I’m sad that Newsroom is over for the season, but thankfully, West Wing is now on Amazon streaming.
  • Having just finished reading Dallas Willard’s The Great Omission, I’ve been thinking a lot about my need for solitude. So…
  • I’m trying to line up a personal retreat for the next weekend.  Get away where all I can do is read, write and pray.  If you know a cabin in the woods within a few hours of Austin, I’d love to hear from you.
  • Got some great Facebook interaction in regard to this week’s Before You Go Missional post.
  • This confirmed what I’ve been seeing all over the place, which is people are really using the word “disciple making.”  Which begs the question: what do people mean by disciple making?
  • This week’s remembrances brought me back to a post I wrote about Osama bin Ladin about a year ago.
  • I’m writing this while listening to John Mark McMillan’s latest.  I’m so glad there are artists like him.

Friday Round Up

Chris —  August 10, 2012
  • Still a lot of bumps and bruises with the new site.  I specifically need a new headshot.  Anybody looking for a model?
  • It’s sad when you realize a honeymoon is over.
  • Do you make cold brew coffee?  I’m looking for the perfect roast.
  • Counting down the days until Everyday Theology.  If you are in Austin, or the Western Hemisphere, you have no good reason not to come.
  • This week’s MAGL reading: The Mentor’s Guide: Facilitating Effective Learning Relationships.
  • I’m trying to focus my thoughts on this blog.  What would you like to see more of?

Friday Roundup

  • Which of the remaining Olympic events are you most excited for?
  • This week’s reading for the MAGL was Scott Boren’s Leading Missional GroupsHighly recommend.
  • Trying to really narrow down what this blog is about. I feel like the “missional missteps” series has been a good step in that direction. Suggestions?
  • It’s weird to think that Social Media is my job now.
  • I bought a grill.  It’s been too long.
  • After almost four years of pinching pennies, I’m able to loosen up a little.  Which means it’s time to redo the budget.
  • Had a great meeting with Jonathan Dodson about our next PlantR MicroConference.  It’ll be the best yet.
  • Quora is really cool.  My favorite thing in Social Media right now (sorry Instagram).
  • A friend loaned me a hardback or pre-Watchmen Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing.  Can’t wait.
  • Another friend wrote in his Facebook status “yadda yadda yadda Chick-fil-a yadda yadda….now it’ll be in everyone’s newsfeed!!” Oh, Internet.
