Evangelism Lessons From a New Ager

On Friday night I went to Downtown Denver for a First Friday Art Walk.  One gallery was host to a family of very talented artists who charged more money for their pictures than I’ve made in the last few months.  I met a lady there who uses crushed jewels to paint animals.

Before I had the chance to ask her “Why use crushed jewels?” she explained that she feels that “the secrets and wisdom of the earth is in energy of the jewels,” and she went on to explain that she was learning and growing spiritually from the jewels.

Having only known her for a few moments, the woman had found a way to unpack her spirituality right before me.  Many Christians, myself including, struggle to find opportunities to talk about Jesus.  Here’s why I think it was easier for her than for us:

1.  She’s totally reliant on her spirituality. She makes her livelihood off of crushing rocks and painting with them.  These rocks, which she believe have a spiritual affect, are directly responsible for her being able to pay the bills.  Do we look at our jobs as spiritual gifts, given to us by God to take care of our needs?

2.  She’s comfortable with being different. Not once did she pause or apologize for her beliefs.  She could care less if others think crushing jewels to absorb their energy is wierd.

3.  She’s excited about what her spirituality does for her. She thinks rocks are really cool.  She gets hyped up about them.  She’s like a grandmother with a new baby photo.  She just can’t help but share her beliefs with anyone who listens.

Clearly, this raises a few questions for us as Christians:

-Are we reliant on God?
-Are we ready to be different?
-Can we get excited about our God?
