Seeing God

A really good argument against the existence of God, and our ability to personally know him is the fact that we can’t see him. But for those of us who have already stepped off the deep end and bought into the whole God thing, we see him everywhere. I’m not talking about something sweet like “I see God in how nice you are,” or some magical moment in nature where a beautiful hillside or a terrifying rainstorm shows you God’s beauty or power. I’m talking about seeing him.

The Bible teaches that mankind was made Imago Dei, in the image of God. This idea of an image, or an icon, is a visual representation of what God looks like. Just like when I see an ancient sculpture of Julius Caesar or a portrait of Shakespeare I learn what they looked like, our world is full of 6 billion people that look like God. Now, I’m pretty sure this doesn’t mean that God has two arms, two legs and a great chin. It’s more like that experience when you meet someone, and can’t help saying “you remind me of someone I know…”

Recently I started a retail job. Although it’s not my dream job, it’s a pretty sweet gig. If you are like me, sometimes you find it hard to keep God in mind as you go through a busy day. But lately, I’ve started looking around at my co-workers and customers, and saying to myself: “You remind of this God I know.” In doing this, I find myself loving God a little more, and treating his ikons a little better.
